Teddybears - Rocket Scientist

Awesome song, awesome video...just awesomness all around.

Sorry, I can't find a buy link for this song (unless you live in Sweeden where the group is from). Hopefully it will be released everywhere soon. I want to get my hands on the studio version of this!

What do you think?

Brandi Carlile - XOBC EP!

Hey hey...

It's no secret...FirstListen is a MAJOR fan of Brandi Carlile. We were lucky enough to be involved with Miss Carlile very early on in her career (hard to believe it was 4.5 years ago!) and we still continue to love and support her and her music and so we wanted to give a you a chance to hear her new EP in its entirety. It's only available on iTunes. The best part is, to my knowledge, FirstListen is the only place (authorized) to actually stream this EP. So if you like it, please do buy it. It's only $4 and Brandi is a great artist and we recommend you support her if you like it. I'm telling you, all the tunes are great.

The EP features 2 covers (a classic from The Beatles and a classic from Bryan Adams) and 3 originals. By all means, let us know what you think of it!

The Script - Breakeven

Okay, so I must admit that I'm a little late on this one. But am I that late? I asked some friends of mine about this song that I thought for sure had heard this song before, but it turned out they hadn't. So maybe you've heard it, maybe you haven't, but it's a perfect song. 5/5...flawless. Great vocals, great songwriting, great hook, catchy...it's got everything.

Hamel

Great tune...with a great vide. Hamel is from The Netherlands. This song actually is a few years old, but it apparently never took off here in the states. What a shame.

My Favorite 25 albums of 2009

I say favorite because as you may have guessed, I didn’t hear EVERY album that was released!

Favorite 25 albums of 2009. I say favorite because as you may have guessed, I didn't hear EVERY album that was released!

25.) Jeremy Jay - Slow Dance
24.) Girls - Album
23.) Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Part. II
22.) Paramore - Brand New Eyes
21.) La Roux - La Roux
20.) Tegan & Sara - Sainthood
19.) Wilco - (The Album)
18.) Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
17.) Roman Candle - Oh Tall Tree in the Ear
16.) The Dead Weather - Horehound
15.) Maxwell - BLACKsummers'night
14.) Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
13.) Royksopp - Junior
12.) Wild Beasts - Two Dancers
11.) Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement
10.) Passion Pit - Manners
9.) The Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
8.) Built to Spill - There is No Enemy
7.) Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest
6.) Flaming Lips - Embryonic
5.) John Mayer - Battle Studies
4.) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
3.) Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
2.) Gossip - Music for Men

The Gossip's album has flown more under the radar I think than any other album on my list (especially for how good it is). It is about as close to perfect as you can get without being perfect. Songs are VERY well written, the vocals are ridiculous and the music is catchy. Pick this up!!

1.)Portugal. The Man - Satanic Satanist

Flawless record. Make sure you pick up the Expanded Edition available only digitally (with the acoustic bonus disc of all the LP songs which is incredible). The songs are amazing. If this band had come out in the 70's, they would’ve been playing arenas. And maybe they still will, but it's harder these days. The band has come a long way and have really perfected their craft.

Some additional comments…

a.) I usually provide more analysis and information about each record, but due to time constraints and the fact that 2009 is well over with I wanted to get the list finished and up as quickly as possible.

b.) The women killed it this year. A solid 9/25 albums were women fronted efforts (including 4 in the top 10). That's pretty awesome.

c.) The top 10 or so albums listed are all near perfect…you really could arrange them in a lot of different ways happily. I think 11-15 are excellent records and 16-25 are very good, but not quite the caliber of the others.

d.) Very weak year for hip-hop. Outside of the Raekwon record and the Mos Def album, I didn't care for many others on the whole (though I'll concede there are a handful of great songs on the Jay-Z record even if the album as a whole wasn't great).

e.) Weak year for the mainstream too. In recent years, I've found more mainstream albums I enjoyed. This year…there's probably 5 albums at best you could list off as "mainstream" on my list.

f.) So you’re not wondering…yes I heard the Animal Collective record and no it wasn't an oversight for me. I think they are a talented band and have a cool thing going on…but I just didn't personally think it was album of the year or in the top 25. I LOVE the Panda Bear project they are/were involved with however.

g.) I’m sure I overlooked a great album or two (probably because I didn't hear it) and I wouldn't be surprised if my opinion changes about this list a month from now. But I feel good about this list.

Thought we'd throw something a little different your way. This song of Evan's was co-written by FirstListen alum Adam Richman. It's catchy, it's clever, and it's perfect for the holiday season. Hope you like it.

Portugal. The Man (selections from the Satantic Satanist)

Image

Portugal. The Man is a FirstListen alumini. We first worked with Portugal a few years back when they dropped the awesome album Church Mouth, found here: http://www.firstlisten.org/artist.php?id=105.

At any rate, their new record, the Satanic Satanist came out in 2009 (and no, they're not devil worshipers nor is that the message behind the title) is 1 of this year's finest albums to come out, at least I think so. The sound of this album sort of crosses rock n roll with Motown. It also sort of reminds me of Oasis at its best. We're glad to have been involved in the early development of Portugal and hope you dig them as well.

Here are a few select tracks from the album for you to check out:

Portugal. The Man - People Say

Portugal. The Man - The Sun

Portugal. The Man - Do You
